A body has been found at the scene of a house fire in Christchurch.

It was discovered on Thursday in a self-contained flat at the back of a house on Rutherford St, Woolston, which caught fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The flat was extensively damaged, and was believed to have been vacant at the time of the fire.

Two women were rescued from the burning house by passersby, Fairfax Media reported.

The body is yet to be identified, and a post mortem will take place on Friday.

Fire investigators are still trying to determine how the blaze started.
