A body has been found in rural bush in Northland and police believe it might have been there for some time.

The body was recovered from an area 20 minutes east of Kaitaia on Thursday, after police had begun a search the day before using cadaver dogs and a specialist search unit.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be held in Auckland on Friday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rhys Johnston says a scene examination will continue at the site.

"We believe the body may have been there for some time and it has been a methodical process to preserve any potential evidence," he said.

Det Sen Sgt Johnston said no further details would be released until formal identification of the body was completed.
