A body found in rural bush in Northland was that of 48-year-old Kimble Moore, a patched member of the Tribesmen Motorcycle Club, police say.

Mr Moore had been missing since March 17 and police last month upgraded the investigation to a homicide.

Mr Moore's body was recovered from an area 20 minutes east of Kaitaia on Thursday, after police had begun a search the day before using cadaver dogs and a specialist search unit.

Police said they hoped the recovery of Mr Moore's body would give his family some degree of comfort, "knowing that they will now be able to bring their whanau member home".

A scene examination is expected to be completed on Friday evening and the homicide investigation is ongoing.

Police have said the body was there for some time.
