A body has been found in Manukau Harbour, but police say it is too early to know if it's that of a man who went missing while fishing a week ago.

A fisherman made the discovery at Wattle Bay on Wednesday and police plan to remove the body during the evening so formal identification can begin.

A 52-year-old man went missing last Wednesday during a trip with his eight-year-old daughter in a 3.6-metre dinghy.

The dinghy was spotted empty and drifting in the late afternoon, sparking an air and sea search.

The girl was located more than two hours later treading water in the darkness, but there was no sign of her father.

Police say they have notified the family that a body has been found.
