The body of a climber who fell to their death on Mt Harper in Canterbury has been recovered.

Constable Philip Simmonds said police were alerted to the incident after a person activated a locator beacon at about 4.30pm on Thursday when their partner did not return from a day trip climbing on Mt Harper.

The rescue helicopter flew to the spot, spoke to the person who activated the beacon and then searched the area.

Rescuers spotted a body, which appeared to have fallen a considerable distance, but were unable to recover it.

The body was recovered on Friday.

Formal identification is under way and police have not released the person's name.

The death has been referred to the coroner.
