Boil-water notice for Pahiatua

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 2/09/2016

People living in Pahiatua are being told to boil water before using it after E.coli was discovered in the water supply.

Tararua District Council says it issued the notice on Friday as a precaution and there have been no reports of illness.

The move comes after two consecutive days of positive test results for E.coli in the Pahiatua water supply and following consultation with MidCentral Health and the Ministry of Health.

The council also began chlorinating the water from midday on Friday.

No contamination has been detected in the reticulated supply.

The boil-water notice will stay in place until the council has received three consecutive days of clear test results.

The water supply comes from a deep bore which is not normally chlorinated.

The council says a water tank will be delivered to Pahiatua Service Centre by 5pm on Friday.

The moves come after thousands of people became sick in Havelock North from contaminated water. During that outbreak officials said E.coli can be an indicator of other bacteria in water.
