Bomb scare at Rimutaka Prison

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 9/10/2016

A report of a suspicious package, which sparked a bomb alert at Rimutaka Prison, has proved to be a false alarm.

The package was spotted in the Upper Hutt prison carpark on Monday morning, forcing police to close the road in and sending in a search team and bomb-sniffing dog.

However, nothing was found and prison operations were later resumed, a Corrections spokesman says.

Earlier, prison director Chris Burns said bomb threats at prisons were not uncommon.

Rimutaka Prison holds up to 1002 minimum to high security prisoners.
