People have been evacuated from Queenstown Airport's terminal after a suspected bomb threat.

A cleaner discovered a note "mentioning a bomb" on a plane on the tarmac shortly before 3pm on Sunday and the airport terminal was evacuated following the discovery, police say.

Aviation Security and police have searched the plane and found no evidence of an explosive.

Teams are continuing to search through baggage and the terminal building and are talking to passengers.

Queenstown Airport is ranked as the fourth busiest of New Zealand's airports for passengers. It hosts about 1.6 million visitors through the terminal a year.

It's located in Frankton, 10 minutes from Queenstown, a busy resort that serves several ski fields in the area.
