The discovery of a booby-trapped cannabis plot in Otago has police concerned that passers-by, including children, were put at risk of serious injury.

The plot was found at Buckler Burn River Flats near Glenorchy.

Police have recovered six plants in the area near the gravel pit and say there is evidence that other plants grown there had been harvested.

Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis says the booby traps were hidden in long grass and someone could have easily stood on them.

"This is a popular area where children often play and people regularly walk their dogs," he said on Monday.

"It's really disappointing to see these people put at risk. Police are extremely concerned by this offending and would like to find the people responsible."

Det Sgt Inglis said police wanted to hear from anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area recently or who had information that would help the inquiry.
