Police officers have descended on a small town in the Bay of Plenty to target a ride by gang members.

A road policing operation in Bethlehem on Saturday morning was carried out because a large group of gang members was in the area to attend a memorial event, Senior Sergeant Denis Murphy said.

Sunlive reported there was traffic mayhem and residents reported up to 20 police cars and 40 police officers were stopping patched gang members.

Sen Sgt Murphy said police made no apologies for policing gangs.

Group rides by gangs "intimidate other motorists and are a deliberate and provocative breach of traffic laws".

"The stench of methamphetamine and crime wafts along behind gang members, and police encourage anyone who sees or hears anything about drug use or dealing to let us know," he said.

Members of the public had been understanding and supportive during the operation, he added.
