An 11-month-old Bay of Plenty boy fighting for his life after being hit by a SUV as he was being pushed in his stroller has been transferred to Auckland's Starship children's hospital for specialist care.

The boy, his two-year-old sister and their 33-year-old mother were struck by the SUV towing a trailer on Otamarakau Valley Road, between Tauranga and Whakatane, on Monday afternoon.

The mother was taken to Tauranga Hospital and the two-year-old to Waikato Hospital. Both were in a serious but stable condition.

The boy was initially taken to Tauranga Hospital but transferred to Starship on Monday night, police say.

He remained in a critical condition on Tuesday morning, the hospital says.

They are investigating the cause of the crash and say fatigue may have played a part. The driver of the SUV was not hurt in the crash.
