An amateur boxer has died after collapsing during a bout at a Waikato event.

The fight night held at Te Rapa Racecourse was closed down after a doctor already on the scene was unable to resuscitate the 49-year-old man when he collapsed at about 9.15pm on Saturday.

Although his name has not been released, Fairfax reports he was Neville Knight.

Acting police Inspector Andrew Mortimore said his friends and family were present at the scene.

Police were speaking to witnesses on behalf of the coroner, he said.

Nabby's Boxing Gym, which organised the event, posted on its Facebook page that its "boxing whanau" was devastated.

"This amazing family have been part of our whanau for two years, three family members fought tonight and they loved the sport," it said.

"You trained hard Nev, you earned your name the 'Terminator'."
