An 11-year-old boy has been abducted and sexually assaulted while walking home from a train station in west Auckland.

Police are now hunting for the offender following the attack in Ranui on Thursday afternoon.

The boy had got off a train at Ranui Station just before 4pm and was walking towards Ranui Station Road, when a man driving a grey van stopped to ask him for directions, says Detective Senior Sergeant Jason McIntosh.

The man then abducted him and drove to an unknown location where he sexually assaulted him.

The boy was later released and made it home about 8pm.

"The victim has undergone a medical examination and specialist child interviewers are expected to speak with him today," Det Snr Sgt McIntosh said.

"After that we hope to have more detail about the circumstances and a description of the person we are looking for."

Police had limited information about the offender and were trying to gather information from CCTV footage, he said.

"I know that this will be alarming to the west Auckland community and I'd like to reassure people that we will have extra patrols in the area over the next few days.

"We do need to hear from anyone who has information about that grey van. No piece of information is too small."
