Boy dies in Napier roadworks crash

A boy has died on the Hawke's Bay Expressway after the car his was in ploughed into the back of another vehicle stopped at roadworks.

The boy, whose age hasn't yet been confirmed, died at the scene of the crash on Thursday morning, police say.

The boy was in the back seat of the Mazda.

"His mother and younger sister were taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital. The girl has serious injuries," police said in a statement.

A mother and her two children, one aged 11 years and the other 11 months, were in the front car and have been taken to hospital with various injuries.

Both families are believed to be from Hawke's Bay.

Roadworks at the site have been suspended temporarily and the road has been closed and diversions are in place.
