Kiwi actor James Rolleston remains in an intensive care unit, but is in stable condition after being injured in a car crash near Opotiki.

The 19-year-old star of film Boy was flown to Tauranga Hospital by rescue helicopter after the car he was in hit Otara Bridge late on Tuesday night.

He has since been transferred to Waikato Hospital where he was in a stable condition in the intensive care unit on Thursday morning, the Bay of Plenty District Health Board said.

Mr Rolleston's family in a statement thanked well-wishers, many of who took to social media with messages of support following the crash.

Rolleston played the lead in Taika Waititi's celebrated film Boy, as well as starring alongside Cliff Curtis in The Dark Horse.

A second person in the car suffered minor injuries.
