Breakers lose again to Bullets pre-season

The New Zealand Breakers have suffered a second loss to the Brisbane Bullets in their pre-season series, going down 79-75 in Napier.

The performance was an improvement on an 80-70 defeat in Tauranga two days earlier, according to Breakers assistant coach Mike Fitchett.

The Breakers led all the way until the final five minutes ultimately paying for the Brisbane club's superior rebounding.

Returning veteran Kirk Penney withdrew early in the game with what the Breakers says is a "slight" calf strain while centre Alex Pledger wasn't risked because of a leg muscle niggle incurred in Tauranga.

Tom Abercrombie top-scored for the Breakers with 19 while American import Akil Mitchell scored 17.

The third and final game of the series is in Invercargill on Saturday.
