New Zealand-born dancer Brendan Cole will be missing from the UK television show Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday night (UK time) due to illness.

The professional dancer, who is partnered with Anastacia, has been suffering with a lung infection and missed rehearsals this week after being admitted to hospital, the show says.

Anastacia will dance instead with Gorka Marquez, who has been working with the singer on the routine, a quickstep to Frank Sinatra's My Kind of Town.

The BBC dismissed reports that other professional dancers were affected by a virus although confirmed Katya Jones had lost her voice, which is said to be on the mend.

Cole was born in Christchurch and moved to live in the UK at the age of 18. He has been a judge on the New Zealand version of the show, Dancing with the Stars.

He tweeted that he will provide an update on his health.
