Kiwi veteran Alker saved his best until last at the Safeway Open, shooting a five-under 67 to improve 26 places on nine-under.

Only 10 of his 70 rivals carded lower on Sunday, including winner Brendan Steele of the United States, who stormed home with a 65 to finish on 18-under, one stroke ahead of compatriot Patton Kizzire.

Alker mixed six birdies with one bogey in damp conditions at the Silverado Resort course in Napa.

The 45-year-old from Hamilton qualified for a full Tour card through a strong finish to last season's second-tier tour.

His previous PGA tenures lasted one season each, in 2003 and 2015.

Danny Lee, beginning a fifth full PGA campaign, finished two shots behind Alker in 50th after closing with 68.
