British High Commission staff whose Wellington office building has been temporarily closed because of the Kaikoura earthquake have moved in with the Aussies.

They will be operating consular services from the Australian High Commission from 9am to 1pm from Monday to Friday until further notice, they said in a statement.

Out-of-hours consular help would be available by phone, but not in person until staff returned to their own building.

British nationals requiring emergency travel documentation were advised to go on to the online booking system, as the documents would have to be issued from Auckland.

The British High Commission building in Hill Street in Thorndon was damaged in the 7.8-magnitude quake on November 14 and was closed after an inspection by engineers.
