A British woman has been savaged by a shark in the South Atlantic before escaping when her husband punched the animal.

Frankie Gonsalves has been named as the woman snorkelling near Ascension Island, a British territory off the west coast of Africa.

She is said to be a government worker in nearby St Helena, also part of UK territory.

Reports say she has been airlifted to the UK after being treated locally at Georgetown Hospital.
