New Zealanders are making the most of unlimited data plans, watching the equivalent to 85 hours of video or TV streaming each in June.

Residential broadband connections in New Zealand used an average of 88 gigabytes each during the month of June, says Jason Attewell, a business performance senior manager from Statistics NZ.

He was commenting on annual Internet Service Provider Survey released on Friday.

"Kiwis are really making the most of their unlimited data plans, considering that half of the broadband connections in June 2016 had no data cap," says Mr Attewell.

The number of fibre-optic broadband connections in New Zealand has more than doubled in a year and almost half have unlimited data plans.

More than 220,000 broadband connections, or 12 per cent of connections, are made through fibre-optic, a high-speed way to use the internet, compared with 105,000 one year ago.

"As the ultrafast broadband rollout continues, more and more people are taking the opportunity to get faster internet at their home or business," says Mr Attewell.

Copper, or digital subscriber lines, remain the most common technology, with a 65 per cent share.

The government aims to have 80 per cent of New Zealanders able to access the internet using fibre by 2022.

Almost half of all broadband connections had unlimited data plans at June 30.

In 2016, there are 43 per cent more unlimited data plans than in 2015, when only about one-third of connections were unlimited.

In total, residential and business connections used more than 143,000 terabytes in the month of June 2016, a 70 per cent increase from 2015.

This increase in data usage is likely to coincide with the increasing number of streaming services available.

Also, telecommunications services are 20 per cent cheaper in June 2016 than in June 2011.
