Veteran Radio New Zealand broadcaster Lloyd Scott has handed over his microphone and will be leaving the state-owned radio station in August after more than 53 years.

Scott, in his mid 70s, has hosted the overnight show for the last 13 years.

He says he is comfortable with his decision but has mixed feelings about leaving as the reality starts to sink in.

"Sometimes I'm excited about the freedom I'll have, but it's tinged with feelings of loss as well."

Scott's career began as a radio technician in Greymouth in 1963.

The only things he worked on are RNZ Concert and sports commentaries, he said.

"I have loved every minute of it."
