Canterbury halfback Mitchell Drummond will miss the rest of the provincial rugby season after breaking his leg during training on Wednesday.

Drummond will undergo an operation to insert a plate and screws in his left fibula, and then begin rehabilitation with the aim of returning in the early stages of next year's Super Rugby competition.

Canterbury coach Scott Robertson said it was an upsetting blow for Drummond.

"Mitch is playing some great rugby for us at the moment, so it's disappointing to see him have his season so prematurely ended," he said.

"But he has a great attitude and work ethic, so I know that he will bounce back from this injury and be back out on the field making a full contribution next year."
