Reluctant hero Mamadou Diallo, cheered Wednesday by his Bronx neighbors, said his lone concern in taking a tire iron to a would-be rapist was protecting his wife.

“I’m fighting for my family and myself,” the 61-year-old Diallo said outside the apartment building where he mortally injured ex-con Earl Nash.

“Look, if anybody touches my family, I fight for my family,” said Diallo. “I called police, police (don’t) arrive, I’m fighting for myself.”

Diallo was freed without bail on an assault charge two days after the fatal Monday night elevator brawl with Nash — a Bronx resident who allegedly attacked Diallo’s wife, Nenegale.

She called her cab driver husband after fighting off Nash inside their apartment, and Mamadou Diallo arrived with a tire iron in hand to rescue his wife, police sources said.

“I don’t want to be a hero,” said Diallo. “I don’t want to be a killer.”

Diallo, asked if he regretted the lethal fight with Nash, responded quietly: “Yeah, I feel bad.” He wore a blue suit, and declined to answer any other questions about the Monday night death.

Officials initially charged Diallo with manslaughter before the charges were reduced.

Support for Diallo poured in from around the city and the country for his brave stand in the sixth-floor hallway outside the apartment.

Startling video made public Wednesday showed jittery ex-con Nash, 43, pacing bare-chested by the elevator, his pants low on his hips.

The elevator doors open as Mamadou Diallo rushes out. He spins to face Nash, apparently after his wife shouts, “That’s him!”

Diallo takes out a tire iron and starts bashing Nash in a wild frenzy, with the career criminal managing to briefly shove the cabbie out of the elevator.

The beatdown left Nash with a fractured skull, his blood splattered in the elevator and a hallway, sources said.
