A broom-swinging Auckland mum has put two armed robbers to flight, forcing the men to take to a children's BMX bike to make their getaway.

The robbers armed with a black hand-gun had threatened the owner of a Penrose shop in Church Street at 10.45am on Sunday before his elderly mum launched into action.

"Despite the fact that these two have been chased away by an elderly lady with a broom, this was a very serious armed hold-up, a gun has been pointed at an innocent person, who was just doing his job," Detective Senior Sergeant Aaron Pascoe said.

The offenders, wearing high-viz clothing and workboots, escaped on bikes, one of which was a lime-green BMX.

They were last seen heading south on Great South Road, towards Otahuhu.

Police are also investigating an incident on Monday morning after a man wearing a high-viz top used a hand-gun to threaten a staff member at a money exchange shop in Queen Street in Auckland's central district at 8.05am.

The man fled with a sum of money, including foreign currency.

"We're investigating whether the two robberies are linked but we need to hear from anyone with information," Det Snr Sgt Pascoe said.
