New Zealand's Foreign Minister has praised Hong Kong's economic success under China as the city marks 20 years since its handover from Britain.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to join anniversary celebrations on Saturday, while pro-democracy and pro-Beijing demonstrators are also expected to take to the streets.

Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee said on Saturday China's "one country, two systems" rule of Hong Kong had been "very positive" and gave confidence to Kiwi businesses operating there.

"New Zealand is pleased to join the 20th anniversary celebrations," he said.

"We were proud to be the second country - after China - to conclude a Closer Economic Partnership with Hong Kong, which is now our tenth largest export market."

He said New Zealand goods and service exported to Hong Kong totalled $1.15 billion in 2016.
