Gerry Brownlee will meet with Tonga's King Tupou VI on his first overseas trip as Foreign Minister.

Mr Brownlee will also meet with Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva and cabinet ministers during his visit, which will include discussions on New Zealand's assistance to the island nation in the areas of energy, policing, justice and education.

He is expected to travel to the country on Tuesday to also meet with business leaders and visit New Zealand-funded renewable energy projects.

"Tonga's small but growing economy presents opportunities for New Zealand businesses - particularly in the areas of energy, construction materials, wharf development and tourism," Mr Brownlee said.

New Zealand is expected to spend around $62 million on development projects in Tonga up to 2018.
