Trains in and out of the transport hub were halted on Tuesday evening. Police descended on the building and soldiers were also pictured outside.

Local media said a person wearing an explosive belt was "neutralised" inside the station by soldiers who were on duty.

Belgian police said an "incident involving an individual" at the station was under control.

The Belgian capital's Grand Place, a major tourist site, was evacuated along with the station about 200 metres away.

One passenger tweeted: "Explosions at Brussels Centraal. "We missed them by practically nothing, evacuated into restaurant for now.

Hoping for no casualties." Belgium has been on high alert since suicide bombers killed 32 people on the Brussels subway and at an airport on March 22, 2016.
