A victim of the Brussels terror attack whose picture went viral across the world has been identified as an air stewardess.

Nidhi Chaphekar was caught up in the blast after travelling through Brussels airport on her way to Newark for India-based airline Jet Airways.

She was pictured in her distinctive yellow uniform, ripped open by the force of the two bombs that were let off yesterday morning.

The cabin crew member was also bleeding from the head as she stared down the lens of a picture posted onto Twitter.

Her image was used across the world to symbolise the tragic events of yesterday, which killed 34 people after another explosion occurred at Maalbeek metro station.

Journalist Ketevan Kardava, a special correspondent for the Georgian Public Broadcaster based in Brussels, took the photo after being caught up in the attacks.

Ms Chaphekar, a mother-of-two, is recovering in hospital, a source close to her family confirmed, and will be flying home from Brussels.

Jet Airways said: "She was waiting to board a flight from Brussels to Newark at 10.15am local time. She is a cabin crew member.

"We don't have full information on the extent of her injuries. We know her location - she is in hospital and receiving medical care."

The company added in a statement: "We are working very closely with the Indian Embassy and are in touch with the ambassador to plan the next steps for evacuation of our guests from Brussels."

Jet Airways has cancelled flights operating to/from and via Brussels.

The two blasts ripped through the airport at around 8am yesterday as three men were captured on CCTV walking through the departure hall moments before the explosions.
