Holden Spark © Holden Spark It may cost a fraction of the price of some of its rivals, but that hasn't stopped a budget hatchback from making the shortlist for New Zealand's car of the year.

The Holden Spark, which comes with an entry price of a smidge under $16,500, will be up against some models costing more than six times for the award announced in December.

The decision rests with members of the New Zealand Motoring Writers' Guild and the AA who have driven the 10 finalists and they'll rank the vehicles on a number of criteria including value, design and quality.

"It's pleasing to see many affordable options included in the top 10 list of finalists boasting a lot of safety technology and great design. There really is something for everyone with this year's line up," AA Motoring Services general manager Stella Stocks said.

Mercedes-Benz has two finalists, but the manufacturer of last year's winner, the BMW i3, is absent from the 2016 shortlist.
