Budget to grow heritage storage

Millions will be spent safeguarding the nation's heritage collections and government records with funds allocated in this month's budget.

Internal Affairs Minister Peter Dunne says the budget allocates $8 million over the next two years for operating costs, and $2.1 million in capital infrastructure funding this year for the first stage of a major upgrade of storage and facilities at Archives New Zealand's repository in Wellington.

"Our vast collections include important government records, valuable documentary heritage, artwork, scientific data and taonga," Mr Dunne said.

The building needs significant upgrades to services and environmental control systems that preserve the materials, and will expand to meet demand for storage.

"We need to preserve this history for future generations and this boost in funding will go a long way to ensuring that happens," Mr Dunne said.
