Next week's budget will be very similar to its predecessors with a strong focus on economic growth, social services and responsible spending, Prime Minister John Key says.

"We had a small surplus last year so we can invest more in the things that matter, like health and education," he said at his post-cabinet press conference on Monday.

"Overall, budget 2016 will focus on investing in a growing economy to create more jobs and higher wages, and better public services.

"Like the seven budgets before it, this budget will demonstrate our continued commitment to responsible fiscal management."

Mr Key says Finance Minister Bill English will present his 8th budget on May 26 against the background of an economy that is performing very well.

"Tens of thousands of jobs have been created each year, and incomes generally are rising faster than inflation."

Mr Key says the budget will continue to support the business growth agenda and also focus on improving public services so they can cope with the growing population.
