Building consents hit 11 year high

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 31/05/2016

Consents for more than 28,000 dwellings were issued in the year to April, which Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith says was an 11-year high.

The 28,038 consents were up 12 per cent on the previous year and more than double the 13,236 five years ago, he said on Tuesday.

"This is the longest and strongest period of growth in residential construction in New Zealand history, with four consecutive years of 10 per cent plus growth nationally and 15 per cent plus growth in Auckland," he said.

"This is important, because supply is at the core of New Zealand's challenges around affordable, social and emergency housing."

Dr Smith says the value of residential and commercial building work for the year to April was $17.6 billion, an all-time high and 14 per cent up on the previous year.
