Building fire closes central Christchurch

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 14/07/2016

A large fire in a multi-storey derelict building has closed off central Christchurch.

The fire in the building, between Tuam and Lichfield streets and south of Cathedral Square, started on Thursday evening and was clearly showing from the roof, a Fire Service spokesman says.

Six fire engines and a turntable unit were battling the blaze.

The building, believed to the RFD Investments, was up to four storeys high and derelict - one of many derelict buildings still in Christchurch following the deadly 2011 earthquake.

No one has been reported injured in the blaze.
