Bulldozer reaches snowed-in 4WD

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 5/06/2016

A bulldozer has reached 13 abandoned 4WD vehicles buried under several metres of snow in Central Otago.

A group of 38 were rescued almost a fortnight ago after they became stranded during a back-country trip near the Southland-Otago border.

The group has hired a bulldozer to clear a path and it reached the vehicles on Sunday morning, the Otago Daily Times reports.

Central Otago District Council chief executive Leanne Mash says their detailed plan had been handed to her as part of an application to use the dozer on a public road.

It had been approved but the group would have to pay for any damage they may cause to the road or surrounding area.

About 3m of snow has been dumped over the area but good weather was forecast over the long weekend.

The group, which included two children, spent nearly 24 hours stuck in the vehicles as blizzard-like conditions prevented rescuers reaching them.
