Cruise ship Sirena sails from the Bay of Islands on Tuesday, marking the end of a bumper cruise season.

The ship is the last of 41 from 22 cruise lines to visit this season, which began in September.

Cruise New Zealand executive officer Kevin O'Sullivan says 760 calls were made to 31 locations in the country by cruise ships, injecting about $490 million into the economy.

"Cruise ships in our ports contribute to the vibrancy of New Zealand's cities and have become very much a part of the scenery," he said.

Mr Sullivan said even greater numbers of tourists could visit in 2017-18, with the season to begin with the visit of the Pacific Jewel to Auckland on September 1.

Cruise ships will bring more than 280,000 people to New Zealand next summer, he said.
