Te Awamatu's police have been among victims of a series of burglaries in the Waikato town this week.

Staff arriving on Wednesday morning found that several several items of police uniform had been taken overnight, including a tunic and shirts.

Also gone were police batons, handcuffs, pepper spray and stab-resistant body armour.

Police say an officer's personal car was damaged the following night.

Area Commander Inspector Naila Hassan says the items could potentially be used to impersonate a police officer, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 12 months in prison.

Insp Hassan says anyone who is approached by an officer should establish the officer's identity if in doubt.

Police have noticed a spike in dishonesty crime in Te Awamatu over the past three days and are responding, she says.

However, they also want the public to be aware of suspicious activity in and around the town.
