The business sector is confident 2017 will be a happy new year.

Nearly all its key indicators point to economic growth of around 3.5 per cent, BusinessNZ says.

"Sectors such as construction, tourism and agriculture continue to show solid longer-term prospects although the recent earthquakes may have put a dent in tourism's short-term prospects," chief executive Kirk Hope said on Tuesday.

"Consumer confidence is strong as a result of strong employment growth, low interest rates and low inflationary pressures.

"Meanwhile, increasingly healthy surpluses are forecast at government level."

Mr Hope say the international environment is less benign, with risks of isolationist and protectionist policies in some parts of the world indicating threats to free trade.
