Labour's Michael Wood had a bigger majority in the Mt Roskill by-election than he thought he did on the night, official results show.

He won 11,623 votes against National candidate Parmjeet Parmar's 4771, a majority of 6852.

Election night results gave Mr Wood 11,170 votes and Ms Parmar 4652, a majority of 6518.

The Electoral Commisson's official results include 902 special votes.

Of those, 39 were overseas votes.

The official results also confirm the poor voter turnout.

Of 46,159 enrolled voters, 17,755 went to the ballot boxes - a 38.5 per cent turnout.

Official results are published after the votes have been recounted and checked for eligibility.
