Cabinet minister Nikki Kaye has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is taking time off to deal with it.

The diagnosis was made on Friday and in a statement, Ms Kaye, 36, called it "devastating news" for her family.

Prime Minister John Key on Monday said she would be taking time off to focus on a full recovery.

"Nikki will be dedicating her energy towards getting well, and I wish her all the best," he said.

Ms Kaye holds the civil defence, ACC and youth minister portfolios.

While she's away her responsibilities will be shared between Gerry Brownlee, Nathan Guy and Anne Tolley.

In a statement on Facebook, Ms Kaye said she would be making sure her electorate office also had additional support in the mean time.

"I am fortunate to have wonderful hardworking staff and National party colleagues who are helping ensure this support is there for my constituents," she said.

"I feel so lucky to have such an amazing family and group of friends who are giving me buckets of love and have been so strong helping me work through this."

She said the Prime Minister had been "hugely caring and supportive".

Politicians from across the political spectrum, including Labour's Jacinda Ardern , were quick to send their support on social media.
