Wellington's Cable Car is back up and running a day earlier than expected after a series of postponements.

A total of $5 million has been spent on upgrading carriages, the winding gear and Cable Car Lane.

The service, which began 114 years ago, had been scheduled to resume on Monday for the first time since restorations works began in June.

It's grand re-opening was pushed back to Wednesday and then Friday, but operators surprised locals and visitors with recommencement of services on Thursday morning.

Trips between Lambton Quay and Kelburn will be free on Thursday and Friday to celebrate the restoration.
