New manager Warren Joyce has the experience to take Melbourne City "to the next level", according to his biggest A-League star, Tim Cahill.

Cahill has yet to train under his new boss as he's on Socceroos duty at the Confederations Cup in Russia.

Joyce previously worked with Manchester United's juniors and coached second-tier Wigan last season, getting the sack just four months into a three-year deal.

His appointment by City Football Group raised eyebrows across the A-League but Cahill says he can't wait to get started under his management.

"It's fantastic," he said from Moscow.

"Since I've been in (Socceroos) camp I've spoken to him a few times just about the future and the club and players and what his expectations are and it's really positive.

"The greatest thing about a manager like that is he brings his experience to take us to the next level.

"He's worked with the best, has great experience in the game ... it's going to be great."
