Tim Cahill has been reinstated to Melbourne City's first team for Wednesday night's FFA Cup final against Sydney FC.

Coach John van 't Schip has put the all-time Socceroos leading goalscorer in his starting side after resting him from Sunday's defeat of Wellington Phoenix.

Cahill will start alongside marquee Argentinian Nicolas Colazo.

The surprise non-selection of the night is Sydney defender Alex Wilkinson, who has been named on the bench for the Sky Blues XI.

He had been troubled with an ankle problem.

Matthew Jurman and makeshift stopper Seb Ryall will fill the central defensive positions in Graham Arnold's side, tasked with stopping league-leading goalscorer Bruno Fornaroli.

Alex Brosque also starts for Sydney, with David Carney and Matt Simon providing firepower from the bench.
