Police say more than 80 people have called in with information about the abduction and sexual assault of an 11-year-old boy in the Auckland suburb of Ranui as their investigation continues.

Officers have been out in force in the west Auckland suburb this week after the boy was abducted, assaulted and dropped off by a man on Thursday afternoon while walking from the local train station.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jason McIntosh said while child protection teams and detectives were still following leads, police were "incredibly appreciative" of the dozens of tips they had received.

"Everything helps and we're busy assessing information and following up on details," he said.

"We continue to support the victim and his family and while we appreciate the high level of interest in this case, we are not yet in a position to provide further information on the investigation."

Police are appealed for sightings of a man driving a grey van around the area of Metcalf and Swanson Roads at about 4pm on November 17.

They're are also asking for anyone with private CCTV or smart phone footage from Thursday afternoon to contact them.
