Searchers looking for a Swedish hunter missing in West Coast bush have found a campsite they think he used.

Christian Tommarck, 27, went hunting by himself in the isolated Karangarua area, south of Fox Glacier, just over one week ago and was due out last Wednesday.

The search on Saturday afternoon focused on the upper reaches of Regina Creek and weather conditions were better than on Friday, Sergeant Mathew Tailby of West Coast police search and rescue said.

A positive sighting of Mr Tommarck helped direct the search and a helicopter was also used.

Searchers found a sleeping bag and tent at the campsite.

The area being searched has tricky terrain and those on the ground looking are being rotated.

The search is expected to wind down on Saturday evening and resume on Sunday.

Mr Tommarck's family in Sweden have been told he is missing and are being kept up to date.
