Cancer patient raising money for others

© Rex Shutterstock A 16-year-old girl who is dying of cancer is trying to raise money to help survivors of sexual assault.

Eva McGauley has teamed up with HELP, an Auckland-based not-for-profit that helps women and children heal from the affects of sexual assault, and has set up a givealittle page to raise $50,000.

She says on the page: "When you know your days are numbered, it really makes it clear what matters to you.

"Sure, I could pin my hopes on meeting my favourite actress, or travelling the world. But what I really want is to make a positive difference that will still be helping people's lives after I am gone - to give more in life than that I have taken."

She says sexual violence matters to her because she has seen it affect friends.

"One of my friends sits across from her rapist in class every day. That really breaks my heart."

The page has raised more than $1100 since being set up on Friday.

According to a separate givealittle page that raised $19,598 for Eva in March she was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in February 2015. She received treatment in Christchurch and returned to Wellington with her mother but a remission was short-lived.
