A dedicated team had been investigating the "complex" theft from the Ashburton property, which came to light last month.

"Although not impossible, it is highly unlikely that a large number of cattle have been removed over a short period of time," Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said in a statement on Thursday.

"If any offence has taken place, it would have been progressed gradually over months."

Farm administrator Pennie Ormsby-Saunders reported the theft but has said she believes the chances of the cows being recovered is slim.
