Canterbury have begun their Ranfurly Shield defence with a ruthless 71-5 thumping of Wanganui in Christchurch.

New coach Glenn Delaney fielded 10 new caps in his line-up, but there was never any doubt about the final result.

Canterbury ran 10 tries, including a double to hooker Nick Werahiko, while Meads Cup champions Wanganui's sole try came came to second five-eighth Timoci Seruwalu right on halftime.

Canterbury scored five tries in each half, dominating the set piece and breakdown, and showed too much pace and variation in the backs for Wanganui to handle.

Canterbury 71 (Nick Werahiko 2, Jack Stratton, Mark Maitland, Dylan Nel, Marshall Suckling, Mitchell Dunshea, Poasa Waqanibau, Steve Alfeld, Caleb Makene tries; Brett Cameron 7 con, 1 pen; Finn Strawbridge 2 con).
