Canterbury have kickstarted their national women's Twenty20 title defence with a narrow three-wicket win over Otago at Molyneux Park in Alexandra.

Anchored by White Ferns skipper Susie Bates's 41, and boosted at the close by Megan Gibbs's unbeaten 19-ball 30, Otago reached 128-5 from their 20 overs.

Despite looking initially comfortable, with Frankie Mackay (45) and Amy Satterthwaite (37) putting on 53 for the first wicket, three wickets in six balls left Canterbury needing three off the final delivery.

Natalie Cox duly obliged with a four to secure the win for Canterbury.

In other matches, Northern Districts eased to a seven-wicket win over Wellington at Cobham Oval in Whangarei.

Rachel Priest top-scored for Wellington with 48 as they reached 117-4 after winning the toss, but Northern timed their chase perfectly to make 119-3 with four balls to spare.

At Devonport Domain, a strong all-round bowling performance helped Auckland to a 42-run win over Central Districts.

An unbeaten sixth-wicket 40-run partnership off 26 balls between Holly Huddleston and Lauren Down set up Auckland's 143-5.

Early wickets cost Central, who struggled through to 101-6 after sitting on 21-3 midway through the seventh over.
