Canterbury wasp killer ignites own house

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/04/2016 Cleo Fraser

A Canterbury man has set fire to his house while trying to destroy a wasp nest with a home-made blow torch.

Firefighters were called to a house at Southbridge, southwest of Christchurch, on Thursday night after the man used a paint spray can and lighter to try and get rid of the insects, which had made themselves at home in a hole in the wall.

The man "wasn't the brightest spark" and had risked burning down his home or hurting someone, says the Fire Service's Riwai Grace.

"This is a really good example of not what to do," he told NZ Newswire on Friday.

"I've never heard of a job like this and I'm in my 19th year.

"People should invest in getting in someone who knows what they're doing."

It took fire crews less than an hour to put out the blaze which damaged a large area of the wall.
